Tackling Toy Story

.

Watch ‘Toyz Noize’ and ‘Buzzwing’ on YouTube!

At long last, my Toy Story tracks are out there getting some sunshine. It bowls me over how fast my videos  collect views. In just two days, ‘Toyz Noize’ already had half the crowd of ‘Gardyn’ tuning in. Disney Pixar has also posted the videos to their channel, slapping on some paid advertisement and featured promotion on the YouTube home page. I’m excited. Working passionately within corporate restrictions has proven to be disfunctional at times, but if there’s one thing I’m grateful for, it’s the fact Disney is fixing a medal to my jacket instead of tacking a subpoena to my forehead. It seems the mouse has a merciful side.

Production

The production of ‘Toyz Noize’ had me burried away in my hermit-cave for a good month or so. I spent many hours scanning through ‘Toy Story’ for syllables, sound effects, chords, passages – anything that made my ears prick. I produced several sections that I ended up binning, including an awkward section of John Lasseter rapping about the success of the film. The structure of the track changed enormously over time. At one stage, the track began with a darker version of Woody’s rap. At another stage, it was Randy Newman’s mix that finished the track off.

‘Toyz Noize’ starts off with a loop of the beep sequence that plays when Buzz presses his voice button to impress his new friends. We then hear a brief fade-in of his respiratory system in reverse before the track kicks off. The kick drum is Woody’s magic 8-ball hitting the floor behind Andy’s desk. The percussion comprises sounds of Buzz’s helmet and wings, Slinky’s spring and a few other toy sounds from around Andy’s room. In the first section leading up to Randy Newman’s mix, I used the “bobbing” of the orchestra that plays during the opening jib shot of the film, accompanied by my own bass to gives it some extra definition. All of the chords and passages throughout ‘Toyz Noize’ are recorded from the film, the longest of which is the string détaché that loops as Woody tries to cheer up his fallen space ranger during the breaks. All in all, I recorded a total of 206 sounds from the film.

‘Buzzwing’

‘Buzzwing’ was a side-project I developed when I wasn’t bent over at the grindstone. Composing freely in my spare time is like a breath of fresh air – investing my creative energy into a commissioned project with a deadline can often be a very different experience. ‘Buzzwing’ bored into my head very quickly. I found myself listening to it more and more, particularly at times when my levels of happiness and optimism were sagging. I found it emotionally fortifying for lack of a better description, so I decided to submit it to Disney along with my major project. I’m surprised to hear that some people actually prefer ‘Buzzwing’ to ‘Toyz Noize’.

Legal Issues

A few days before the fruits of my labour hit the web, Disney Legal hit the brakes with a last-minute issue that needed resolving. Any shots featuring the pink-haired troll doll had to be removed. Apparently, the rights to display this particular toy in my video could not be obtained in the two months I gave them to clear the video for release. The troll appeared in several shots throughout Andy’s playtime sequence, and I spent just over half an hour finding suitable replacements at the last minute. I feel the sequence is compromised as a result, but hopefully that’s just the perfectionist in me. The mouse also warned me that the Tinker Toys microphone that Woody holds throughout his rapping sequence might be off limits as well, but thankfully this was not the case in the end. What I would have done without MC Woody I’ll never know.

Logo Design

The logos for each track are my own works as well. For ‘Toyz Noize’, I spent two hours drawing a Z to perfection and enlarging the red box to make way for the word ‘Noize’. The challenge was not just to employ the same design characteristics like angles and shadows, but to design and position a new letter so as not to stand out. I’m still not sure if the Z should be of equal height to the O or taller than the Y, but overall, I’m quite happy. The ‘Buzzwing’ logo is a complete custom job inspired by the colors and lettering I saw on the front of a magazine that Rex finds at Al’s Toy Barn in Toy Story 2.

The Future

I thoroughly enjoy listening to ‘Toyz Noize’ and ‘Buzzwing’, and I hope they go on to excite and inspire people as they do me. Some MP3′s from the mouse would certainly meet popular demand, but hey, even ‘Upular’ remains an ornament for who knows how much longer. Thank you for your amazing support, everyone, and keep tuning in for more tracks in the near future!

LOVE the fact that you let us get a peek inside that mind of yours. If I ever got the chance to sit and discuss your creative process with you, that’s exactly how I imagine you’d explain yourself…..=)

Once again Pogo you have propelled any expectation I have of you clean out of the water. When I first heard Toyz Noize, I admit I wasn’t as much of a fan but I instantly fell in love with Buzzwing. Since then I now see Toyz Noize to be the absolute work of genius it is; there is a specific sequence from about 1:50-2:10 that blows my mind each time I hear it. I’m not sure how you manage it but literally every piece you compose is better than the last and it all started at such superb quality. I’m glad you found these videos fulfilling and inspirational as I believe all of us do.

Also I, like a lot of others, really feel we should be paying you for these tracks, a Pogo album would sit as pride and joy on my CD shelf or in my Media Library. I hope you get to do more live shows as well, though I know it’ll be a long time before you come to the UK for one, when it happens I’ll be there, front row centre.

Keep up the sterling work dude, you really are an inspiration to me and, I’m sure, many others; thank you.

I wish disney would let you make an mp3 for buzzwing and upular. as for toyz noise, i must confess i didnt enjoy that QUITE as much. But your music is still great and i hope you keep it up, just try to make some stuff away from disney too so you can make mp3s for them.

  5. Smars says:

dude, i love your work… very soothing but upbeat enough that it just puts me in a positive frame of mind.
very unique work all around, and your latest songs are great.

you actually got mentioned for the second time on my favourite podcast.
i wish you all the greater, future, success you deserve.
keep up the awesome works mate!

    hey pogo,

this is terrific !!!!!! I CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO TOYZ NOIZE AND BUZZWING!!!!!!!!!
Listen, i read one of you’re comments on youtube and some people are hating on you and saying stuff that is not true. all i wanted you to know is that they are stupid and they’re just saying that just to put you down. like why are they watching your amazing videos and put insulting comments? like have you ever thought of that?it’s because they have nothing else to do and because they are jealous of you. not a lot of people have the same skill like you do. you are legend. i bet you they write the same comments to other artists similar as to yours or any kind of bands, singers, musicians and etc. well, another thing to tell you is that i listen to your music everyday, it makes me feel so happy and i hope i’ll see you in the future. never stop in believing yourself that you can do it and it will lead you far. god bless you with all your heart.

Yes! Thank you! I’ve always wondered what the sample count tended to loom at.

anecdote time: After listening to Toyz Noize, I decided “screw everything, I am doing a remix in Pogo style.”
Within 1 minute of music, I had accumulated 80+ samples, and began to wonder if I was being excessive. I see now I’m within the norm, if “normal” could be used to describe anything with Pogo’s name attached. :)

Just want to say you’re a musical inspiration, and although I’ve never been musically inclined, your remixes and beats make me want to start being so. I’ve been following your stuff for quite awhile, and had no idea that you had made these. Great as always, and I love Toy Story, so that’s a plus =D. Both are awesome and I can’t wait for an .mp3 when they come out. I’d gladly pay for them, even.

Keep doing what you do, it’s like nothing else out there.

Pogo, I’ve been following you for about a year and half now and enjoy all your videos and songs. You seem like a very professional individual with your youtube account, twitter, facebook, interviews, and your website here. I tend to check in on all of these sites everyday for updates. I even listened to your appearence on australian radio. Pretty much have it all. What you should do (that is if you have time) is try and do a face to face with the camera. Wheather it be someone interviewing you (even myself if you’d like) haha. OR someone else I follow on facebook (Roger Federer). Giving a little 30 second update what is going on in his life and always thanking his supporters. Anyways, keep up the great work and I will post my email along for any reasons necessary.

I loved both tracks you made here. I like how you’re using a lot less of the instruments like your cymbals and such and doing a lot more with the voices of and other noises. I think that’s why I love Skynet so much, I just love how amazing it is to listen to it and think, “This was only made with sounds from the movie!” I hope you do a lot more like that one.
And if you’re ever out of ideas, I strongly suggest doing one for Silent Hill the movie or Coraline. Coraline may just be the best one ever!!

    See you on youtube,

Now if only you could get the legal issues cleared up for us to hear “WALL-E” and whatever else you cooked up.

Also, I think you should have a contest for someone to make a video to one of your songs that doesn’t have one. Your favorite could maybe win a song request….of course they would give you 5-10 movies so whatever worked best you could use. (: (and uh I’m not just saying this cause I’m a film student haha). Your work seriously inspires me!

  13. Baxayaun says:

Dude, I want to buy your stuff. I SERIOUSLY WANT TO, but I see that you could have some legal issues. What about Flattr? That new service could provide you some money, and you would not be compromised because the money you receive are basically donations. Sorry for spamming you, but I feel pretty guilty downloading your music with a cheap YouTube Downloader or so.

Keep on the good work, man! I love your music! Give us a call if you visit Berlin! ;)

Dude, I cried. It was so beautiful I think i’ve seen the future. And this is coming from a crass bitter Aphex Twin fan so. But is really is the future, and a hopeful one at that. You’re getting some play, love and respect over at the WeAreTheMusicMakers.com community so that’s how i heard about all this. There’s so much love in Toyz Noize. I wish you could put out vinyl or some kind of hard copy of your work. I’d love to get some MP3′s in the meantime, but i don’t know where to go. Thanks for making my week.

  18. Ryan says:

This is great! I found you through uplar and could not stop listening to all the mixes you have made. Toyz Noize is by far my favorite mix that i have heard, and goes way above my expectations of almost any song. Funny that you can do such a unusual thing compared to all the other artists out there. You’ll be big some day. I can’t wait to find out some way to get these songs.

There is a difference between being original and it being so different no one would try it.
    I’m glad you did.
    Take care.

  19. Michael says:

Nice writeup on the creative process. I like how you are balancing your passion for the music and the paid corporate aspect.
I still am waiting for the day i walk into my local movie theater, the lights go down and the previews start and instead of the boring old same previews there is a Pogo piece. That would be insanely cool.
After I saw ‘Bangarang’ I was like, “Wow, wouldn’t that make a great preview?” Heck I’d want to see that movie!
I bet after that came out sales and rentals of ‘Hook” were “off the hook.”

  20. Lynn says:

i accidentally found Toyz Noize and was instantly hooked. I’ve done little mini videos/montages for my sons’ 6th grade promotions set to music, but this is amazing. I want to try this using home videos. Thanks for the creative inspiration. You’re awesome! we’ve been listening to Toyz Noise, Upular and Bangarang like crazy. I love it. I know it’s a lot of work, but create more! Thanks!!!
