Some of you may have discovered my Kippo albums on my old artist page at Last.fm. Kippo The Sailor is a character I designed a few years ago, and around whom I composed a number of children’s tracks.

Kippo is a star that’s fallen from the sky and needs to make friends on Earth in order to get back home. The three albums I made comprise tracks that each depict one of his experiences or adventures. I suppose one writes what one knows – these tracks really represent experiences of my own that I wrapped up in the fantasy worlds of my imagination. They were a lot of fun to make despite their simplistic sound. Making them was kind of like paving pathways to the worlds in my mind. Listening to them was a very colorful, rewarding escape from the troubles of reality.

I’ve often contemplated making a CG short film to help pitch the idea to everyone. I did nothing but draw comic strips as a child, and given my extensive experience with Maya, I could certainly pull off a quality production. The only obstacle is time. I don’t have much of it in between current projects.

Like the world of Pogos, Kippo is a creation of mine that has always stood out in my head. He’s small, pudgy, and I think it’s quite novel that he’s a lost star stuck on an inhibiting planet whose brightness represents his emotion. I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt Kippo is a great character with whom I can educate and connect with the world. As a newcomer to planet Earth, Kippo could bring into perspective the very real issues we face today. Defining beauty in a plastic society, finding one’s self in a dogmatic ‘one size fits all’ education system, the loss of originality with a ubiquitous desire to conform, etc.

That, and Kippo just feels like a show I’d want to watch.

I’ve always pictured a Kippo series as having an inconspicuous focus on real issues, coated with a sneaky sense of humour, and wrapped in a thick layer of cute, colorful, warm cudliness. I wouldn’t be at all opposed to having Kippo get humourously drunk off his chops at an Irish pub after a fight with his girlfriend if it means reaching out to people in similar situations.

  1. Nadira Bela says:

I love the idea of kippo cause I myself have a HELL of a time trying to show that uniqueness is an essential… I’ve tried public speeches about it but with no avail……so if you could that would be great =3, oh and you are my favorite musical artist, and one of my inspirations. Thanx for making all this music!

  2. Blake Anderson says:

you should enquire to Nintendo about these music ideas, i think of “Kirby” and “Mario Kart” when i hear them

  3. P.SUS says:

“For Two” sounds alot like this song from Mario Kart 64. I thought you sampled it originally but after I listened to it I could tell you didn’t.

    Still interesting similarity!

I’m in absolute adoration of “Trust” out of all these songs – however they’re all brilliant and beautiful in there own little way. I’m definitely going to be popping these on my iPod and bopping around Europe while listening to these while I’m traveling this summer. Thank you for making such beautiful music, I seriously consider you one of my favorite musical artists of all time. <3 ~ Caitlin.

  5. Frank says:

I’m impressed! Now all you have to do is upload Bootiful!!!

  6. v3g374 says:

Amazing tracks Pogo. Sounds like some background music for a good Final Fantasy game. Thank you for releasing it. I will looking forward to a CD release when you think it’s time.

  7. Anonymous says:

Dude, this totally reminds me of Ristar!

  8. 12345 says:

hey i love your songs! good work! is there any way i can download your songs from pogo and from your old last fm page?

  9. Fat Chan says:

This stuff is awesome, anything you do is superb dude. Thank you for sharing this, new Pogo stuff really brightens up my day. ^_^

  10. Bryant says:

God Nick “Trust” is so sick, we should release a JoBurg behind the scenes video with that as the background music. o_O

  11. Leon says:

I believe the person aboves means Joe Hisaishi, as he’s done the music for a good few of the Ghibli movies. That could be something special.

  12. Pat says:

Hey man I checked out your ‘Nick Bertke’ Last.fm and MAN are the some GREAT sounding tunes on there! It seems like everything is only 30 second previews though. Man, if you could let us get our hands on some of that stuff (besides this kippo stuff thanks for this ^_~) that would be awesome. Don’t disregard the stuff as old man….Sounds great.

  13. These tracks are just wonderful!!! They’ve really brightened my day. I’ve only listened to ‘Trust’ so far but my immediate thoughts were of a collaboration between you and Hayao Miyazaki. I think I that would be a cataclysmic pairing of two of my favorite creative people. :D

    Thanks for sharing the tracks.

  14. Maltomeal3 says:

So how can we get our hands on the music you have posted on the Nick Bertke artist page on Last.FM? It’s really good too. Are they older tracks?

  15. Atlus8 says:

I’m loving these tracks! Wish I can hear more hidden stuff you have on the net!

  16. fagofuck says:

These are some pretty simple jolly tunes lol. Btw, it seems the number of “downloads” simply refers to clicks on this website.

  17. Bryan Evans says:

Awesome! hey, when my iTunes scrobbles the music, it credits the songs as by Nick Bertke rather than as by Pogo. Which would you prefer?

  18. Ash Morgan says:

Ah man, it reminds me of my own childhood character.

  19. ApertureDreams says:

Awesome Blossom. I really liked Trust and Kippo Misses His Girl. They were all great, but those two in particular stood out to me.

Keep it coming, Pogo, your fans will never be able to hear enough of what you wish to share :)

  20. Ubope says:

    Thanks for releasing these!

  21. Blake__ says:

Trust is amazing! Would these be available for download on Lastfm?

  22. Blake__ says:

i love them all! If you every perform at Tiger Tiger on a saturday night again (and i really hope you do) You could do a compilation song with Kippo pictures on the screen :)

I would have defs watched this.

thanks for posting and updating recently :)

  23. Kingwing says:

I really like these, but I think they’re best suited for a vg.

  24. Perry says:

Awesome man, thanks for the releases :)

  25. Matt P. says:

Wow. Every song I played so far in the collection is beautiful. What sources (or instruments) did you use?

  26. I don’t know where to begin! Hmm…first off, these tracks are amazing, and I’m glad that you shared Kippo with us. Both the music and the character are very endearing, and I could picture this as a children’s show (and to be honest, infinitely better than some of the crap that’s on TV now). Even a video game could be plausible.

It is my dream to end up in the field of computer animation (though, I haven’t really decided whether it should be strictly animation or video games, perhaps both!) and I would say right now that if it were up to me, I’d get this show on air in a heartbeat! Your ideas are just brimming with potential. :D

I wish the best for whatever you have planned for Kippo. Hopefully we’ll see him in the media soon! ;D
